Massachusetts State police sought to destroy Logan’s Troop F pay records.
Commonwealth Magazine reports that Massachusetts State Police officials tried to secure approval from the Commonwealth’s Records Conservation Board last month, as required by law, to destroy detail and roster assignments from 2009 through 2012 for its Troop F personnel. These troopers patrol Logan Airport, the highways built during the Big Dig and the South Boston waterfront now referred to as the Seaport District.
State police officials claim that they were just complying with state records retention and eventual disposal of old records regulations.
While the request was technically correct as regards the regulations, the Record Conservation Board did not approval the state police’s records disposal request.
Cited reasons for declining the disposal request include the possibility of perhaps later wanting to review these payroll records at a latter date given the overtime pay scandal that has resulted in multiple indictments of a number of now at least suspended without pay troopers who had been assigned to the since disbanded Troop E.
Also, per coverage in the Boston broadsheet, there were actually three record disposal requests filed to dispose of F Troop’s old payroll records.
The broadsheet also noted that there appears to be the possibility of improper takings of paid time away from duty by troopers to engage in purported union-related activities that they would appear not to be eligible for undertaking while on the clock for pay by taxpayers.
