The Pawtucket Red Sox are having an impact on the city even before the City Council approves the deal to bring them here.
Since PawSox officials and City of Worcester officials have signed a letter of intent a couple of weeks ago to have the Boston Red Sox’s top minor league team move to Worcester, there has been heightened interest in the city from private developers.
Even if but a modest expectation of the sudden influx of interest by developers actually pans out, it would appear that this economic gamble to jump start economic development in Worcester will cover its municipal financing nut.
In turn, one cannot help but wonder if Quincy’s Mayor Koch will follow up with a bid to entice the Portland Sea Dogs, the Red Sox’s Double A minor league team, to relocate to the Q.
While there is likely not enough land available in his still but stumbling along plans for Quincy Center for a minor league baseball park in Quincy Center, there is surely enough underdeveloped land on Ricutti Drive in West Quincy.
In fact, there one was a plan for a Fenway Park replica little league ballpark in the area – not to mention such could provide a way for Mayor Koch to make it up for certain property owner in the area over his suffering a sizeable campaign finance violation fine.
Additionally, given yet another round of “friendly takings” for another local sports stadium, a Fenway Park replica could be shoehorned into the current venue of the Quincy Center Star Market and a few key adjacent parcels.
Additionally, much needed parking capacity developed in and around the site of the now former Ross Garage on the other side of Burgin Parkway.
Further, the current Granite Plaza shopping center could be reconfigured as a Yawkey Way-style entryway to the ballpark, featured Koch Dogs, Koch a Cola and overpriced sports tchotchkes.
