Beverly to euthanize Canadian Geese via controversial plan.

The Beverly Police Department said on Wednesday that they had hired a private contractor to remove Canada geese from their public parks and then off site to euthanize them.

Feeding the less fortunate

Per the Quarry’s media brethren at Fox 25, the so harvested geese will be offered to homeless shelters to provide goose dinners

Needless to say, many less than knowledgeable people have questioned Beverly’s plan.

In particular, some have found the ecologically sound plan to provide the culled geese to homeless shelters appalling, including one (mistaken, ed.) comment that one cannot eat wild geese or turkey.

Granted, there are a variety of others ways to address geese overrunning public spaces, but such options are venue-specific as well as vary in cost.

Key to remember points follow.

“Goose Grease”

One, “Goose Grease” all but invariably carries diseases that can strike human beings, not to mention that it is at least as unpleasant to step in as is dog poop.

Additionally, as well as in point of fact, the burgeoning growth in local geese populations is ultimately fueled by human development as opposed to nature.

Human development has encouraged Canadian Geese to take up permanent but undocumented residence in the United States as opposed to migrating back and forth from Canada to but vacation at points south during the winter.

Further fueling this influx of undocumented permanent residents, Canadian Geese were formerly under considerable threat from hunting and other factors some fifty years ago and thus given protected status.

In intervening years, however, Canadian Geese have made a dramatic comeback.

At the same time, however, their protected status, if not also so exempt immigration status, has allowed them to so proliferate in number that they have become public nuisances in some –  if not many – United States communities.

For example, Quincy has long had a Canadian Goose problem.

Unfortunately, and as it the case with many local problems, Quincy’s City Hall has all but ineffectually responded to the fact that local undocumented Canadian Geese have long made a mess out of local parks, school grounds and sports fields.

Then again, such is only to be expected given that City Hall is as full of byproduct as are a number of local parks, school grounds and sports fields are littered with “Goose Grease”
