Quincy Parks Department crams before the start of a new school year.

A new public school year has come to Quincy, not to mention that surely many thousands of local parents wish it had arrived sooner.

At the same time, however, the City of Quincy Parks and Forestry Department has run late on its back to school activities, if not also arguably procrastinated, as school grounds are riff with weeds as high as up to one’s hip.

The arguable procrastination is arguably further inexcusable given how this summer’s drought has laid waste to vegetation as well as that it would appear that the Park and Forestry Department has not exactly been working all that hard watering city landscaping this summer.

As for the late and less than effective efforts to clean up school landscaping, Quincy Quarry has, among other things, photographically captured Parks and Forestry Department personnel cleaning up the grounds at a local middle school Sunday morning over Labor Day weekend.

The Quarry considered reaching out to Koch Maladministration to inquire if the city personnel were working premium holiday overtime pay; however, the City Editor figured why bother as the Koch Machine is already hunkered down in full damage control mode over alleged double dipping by a senior officer at the police department.

Plus, City Hall is no fan of Quincy Quarry’s hard but still balanced and fair coverage of news in the Q.

As such, the Quincy instead dispatched personnel to both check and recheck the condition of landscaping care at various local public schools.

At best, the findings were a mixed bag of mostly tricks.

For example, while the well-watered and thus on occasion mushroom-laden luxurious lawn in front of Quincy High School was ready for a photo feature spread in Landscaping Digest – or at least Turf Monthly, nearby flower beds and other landscaped areas were weed-laden, decimated by this summer’s drought or both.

Similarly, upon revisiting the aforementioned middle school, Quincy Quarry photographic personnel found whole beds formerly full of mostly weeds now all but completely cleared of any vegetation whatsoever.

That and dead formal landscaping featured in a previous Quincy Quarry exposé is still in place and so exposing impressible youth to this botanical carnage.

Expect Quincy Quarry to continue to cover the long ongoing carnage in the Q as well as perhaps reach out to People for the Ethical Treatment of Plants (“PETP”) – or at least The Wollaston Garden Club – to see if they might be interested in properly protesting the City of Quincy’s rampant and apparently all but indifferent abuse of plants.
