– News about Quincy MA from Quincy Quarry News.
Quincy Great Red Shark circling chump in the water?
After many weeks of speculation in the Boston Globe, the Patriot Ledger, the Quincy Sun as well as often scooping coverage by Quincy Quarry, will this week be the week that Big Red tosses his hat in the ring and so announces that he will be running for Mayor of Quincy?
After all, with duly embattled current Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch hosting his official campaign kick-off and donation shakedown gala this coming Thursday per his Koch for Koch website, what better way to the take a bite out of Koch’s penchant for hagiographic photo ops?
If Phelan does announce, Quincy residents can expect to be a Battle Royale between now and least the primary in September as opposed to a mere faux WWE/WWF tag team wrestling match.
In the meanwhile, per a Quincy Quarry’s readers poll, Phelan apparently already enjoys considerable support even though he has not formally announced that he is running. This Quarry poll found his support just short of longtime announced fair-haired female as well as longtime School Committee member Anne Mahoney.
Embattled Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch, however, came up short in this polling. Way short, as a matter of fact.
Expect Quincy Quarry to keep its legions of devoted readers advised as developments might break in the Q.

Didn’t the city vote this guy out of office and then when he ran again in the following election they didn’t vote him back in again?? I’m kinda curious why you think he has any support outside of your anti-Koch circle. Do you think the city has that short a memory??
Ed, isn’t that the purpose of an election? May the best man win.
Mr. Sam,
Or best woman. Don’t forget that the very able Ms Mahoney is one of the candidates.
Mr. Ed,
Do you get out much?
The reason I ask is that Quincy Quarry staff members have for months heard nothing but considerable and often pointed criticisms of the incumbent for months, along with hope that one or the other of the various expected challengers would succeed running against him.
Similarly, the Quarry ran a poll almost a month ago, well before Mr. Phelan announced he was running, and both he and Ms. Mahoney had far better numbers than the incumbent. In fact, even Mr. Gutro outpaced the incumbent.
Granted, it a long way from May to the primary in September, let alone to the general election in November, but such serious unfavorable ratings do not bode well for the incumbent.
For example, all one has to do is look at Hillary Clinton.
That and the incumbent continues to fail to see any of his major initiatives finish up on time and/or on budget.
Next, let’s not forget that Grover Cleveland was reelected after he was voted out after his first Presidential term or that it took Ronald Reagan three tries to be finally win the Presidency.
Heck, even Richard Nixon came from the dead in 1968 after he was left for dead after losing in 1960 and then two years later in his bid to become Governor of California – only to later fall victim to his raging paranoia.
That and the Red Sox won a World Series in 2004.
Then again, it will probably always be next year for the Chicago Cubs.
