Charlie Hebdo survived the killings of 8 of its staff members, along with a number of other victims, by terrorists to publish another day.
Many major media, however, opted to not reprise the cover of the first post-tragedy issue in their coverage of Charlie’s phoenix-like recovery.
Their reason was not one of copyright, but rather out of fear of evoking another violent incident.
This makes no sense, not to mention is a failure to uphold media’s obligation to report the news, however tragic, horrific, or otherwise unsettling.
Conversely, Quincy Quarry’s ecumenical staff sees no offense.
It further reached out to its Muslim friends as well as listened to other Muslims who found no offense with the cover.
In fact, these same Muslims found the cover fitting as no valid religion justifies the killings of others barring the most compelling of rare reasons, including one based upon the proper interpretations of the words and teachings of the Prophet Mohammed.
After all, while far from highlighted as it should have been, a Muslim man saved a group of customers at a kosher grocery store where he worked and where French authorities cornered some of the arguable apostates who cowardly attacked Charlie Hebdo’s offices.
For his trouble, however, police first handcuffed and held him for interrogation for half an hour until police were convinced that he was trying to save lives.
Treatment notwithstanding, the man said he both understood the police’s disbelief and actions as well as would do it all over again as it was the right thing to do.
That and that the store owner, other employees and the store’s customers were his friends.
Conversely, however, there has been increasing anti-Semitism throughout Europe in recent years – and arguably especially so in France and where anti-Semitism has a long and often ugly history.
Natvisim is bad enough in an increasingly mobile world population, but when religion is stirred into the mix, such ultimately but hatred of others because they are different is all the more inexcusable.
