Derailment suspends Commuter Rail service on the MBTA’s Fairmont line.

Just when one could not imagine what new could go wrong with the MBTA, on Tuesday evening an out of service MBTA train knocked an in service Fairmount commuter rail car off of the tracks in an “upright derailment” during a low speed incident.

Fortunately, no one was injured – at least not seriously.

Unfortunately, this instance of bumper cars put the Fairmont Commuter rail line out of service.

A flack at the MBTA has stated that removing the derailed passenger car as well as inspecting and perhaps then repairing the tracks at the scene of this latest MBTA incident are expected to completed in time to reinstate rail service for the Wednesday afternoon commute.

In the meanwhile, substitute bus shuttle service has been instituted.
