Crime rates reach new lows in some South Shore towns but not so much in Quincy.

 

 

A new set of FBI crimes statistics reported annually were released on Monday.

 

In turn, the South Shore broadsheet did its best to address the data within a limited number of column inches.

More telling of how crime is impacting the Q, however, was a citizen posting a comment to this broadsheet article by providing a readily understandable unraveling of somewhat complex statistical data and trend analysis over time as well as shared a little local knowledge:

 

 

“Explaining data and trends is never easy.”

 

In this instance, one must keep in mind that crime rates nationally over the past 30 or so years have been steadily declining.  Arguably the primary reason per those who study such things is a decline in the number of youth and who are the most likely age demographic to be committing crimes.

 

As for Braintree, Quincy and Weymouth, whereas crime rates in Braintree and Weymouth have generally declined in ways consistent with national trends over the years, crime rates in Quincy have not and most especially in the past ten years. 

 

At best in the Q, certain crime categories have declined but they have not declined as much as they have in Braintree, Weymouth or nationally.

 

Further troubling, in other categories, crime rates in Quincy have basically stayed around the same, fluctuated wildly from year to year while at the same time staying essentially unchanged over time, or have increased in the case of certain violent crimes.

 

With all due respect to those on the Quincy Police force, the worrisome crime stats in the Q are not due to a lack of officers or equipment as Quincy ranks well on these factors.

 

Neither are the so-so stats the result of any egregious shortcomings among its rank and file. Senior management and resultant morale problems, however …”
