Seriously, it’s true: The man who wants to build a wall to keep out immigrants is winning over just enough Latinos to get re-elected.

 

Unless, that is, Democrats figure out how to stop him.

In brief, Republican election strategists see an opportunity to build upon Trump’s 28% Hispanic support in 2016 and polling since which suggests his support among Hispanics have steadily, however, perhaps glacially.

 

Specifically, Republican quants have crunched 2016 election data and polled people and so found out what many might find counterintuitive: while Hispanic voters who register a party affiliation overwhelming register as Democrats, their voting habits vary in a few ways from the standard party line as well as often in ways potentially favorable to Republican candidates.

For example, as many Hispanics are Roman Catholic, abortion, birth control and choice are hot button issues.  Also, they tend to be financial conservative, pro law and order on criminal matters as well as surprisingly supportive of reasonable, compelling and consistently enforced immigration laws and policies.

 

In turn, Republican election strategists see an opportunity to build upon Trump’s 28% Hispanic support in the 2016 elections and polling since which suggests his support among Hispanics have steadily, however, perhaps glacially.

Plus, given how Trump won key close races on the state level to secure an electoral college win while at the same time seeing fewer voters nationally than his opponent, but modest gains among Hispanic voters in certain states could enhance his chance for reelection in 2020.

 

Put another way, as Democratic Party senior players have long assumed strong African-American support at the polls while at times African-Americans feel that sometimes they taken for granted, Hispanic voters are not necessarily a given as a consistent Democratic Party ticket voting block.
