Californians Start “Goat Fund Me” campaign in effort to bring goat farmers to cty to prevent wildfires.

Nevada City officials have launched a Go(at) Fund Me account to raise $30,000 to fund bringing goats to this small mountain community to clear away potentially incendiary underbrush so as to reduce the risk of wildfires.

Nevada City is a scenic and historical Gold Rush era small community in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains northeast of Sacramento as well as roughly fifty miles away from Paradise CA which was all but leveled by a wildfire late last year.

The crowdfunding initiative is seeking $30,000 for a controlled– or “prescriptive” – grazing program to use a small army of goats and some sheep on city land.  Goats in particular have a long and successful history of eating overgrown ground level vegetation and so minimizing the most dangerous flammable material in high risk open space settings.

“There is little need to stress how important it is to the safety and well-being of Nevada City citizens and neighboring residents that we reduce the fire load in our surrounding forests and neighborhoods,” the project’s GoFundMe page states.

Time is of the essence for city officials who created this fundraiser because local goat and sheep ranchers are only available on a large scale this winter as available herds have already been booked for many months to come thereafter.

On the bright side of things, prescriptive grazing typically only runs between $500 and $1,000 per acre and thus is a relatively affordable way to manage overgrown vegetation.

They are also efficient as a herd of 200 goats can clear roughly an acre or thereabouts per day.

Moreover, said Nevada City Vice Goats Reinetta Senum noted “These goats, they’re easy on the land, they’ve got little hooves and have a low impact compared to heavy machinery.”
