In the darkest corner of Massachusetts’ justice system, criminal charges disappear often without a trace during so-called “just cause” hearings, reports the Boston Globe.

 

There are few rules in these private hearings and fewer records. 

 

Moreover, roughly 40% of those running these hearings do not have law degrees.

The Boston Globe further reports that these show cause hearings are often a place where who you are — and who you know — may be just as important as right and wrong.

 

Quincy Quarry can and does appreciate how administrative hearings and such can help better manage the crush of criminal charges.

 

Even so, the lack of standards, practices, oversight, transparency and such are unique among both the federal court practices as well as other state court systems and thus disconcerting.
