Brockton parking garage project $5 million in the red.

A Brockton public parking garage project, which already received a $10 million state grant and a $2 million allotment from the city, is facing an estimated $5 million construction cost overrun.

The four hundred space garage that has long been touted as key “to unlock” downtown development in Brockton is currently projected to cost $17 million, almost 40% more than was originally budgeted.

Cited reasons for price increase include increased construction cost in what is a tight market given a hot real estate development market as well as increased materials costs, including increases care of tariffs imposed by President Trump.

In turn, these cost increases can only raise concerns for Mayor Koch’s plans to build a $46.6 million seven hundred and twelve space garage and adjacent open space in Quincy Center.  Given a similar rate of cost increases, the cost to build Mayor Koch’s garage would soar by over $19 million.
