Joseph Wapner, Judge on ‘The People’s Court,’ Dies at 97. 

 

Judge Warner was a retired Los Angeles C0unty Superior Court Judge when The People’s Court debuted on televsion in September 1981.  He was on the TV bench for 12 seasons, longer than any judge who followed him onto the airways.

 

A 1989 poll conducted by the Washington Post showed that while only 9 percent of people could name the chief justice of the U.S. 54 percent knew that Wapner was the judge on The People’s Court.

 

“When The People’s Court came along, I had an opportunity to really teach people about law,” he said in a 2005 interview with the Archive of American Television. “It was very important to me.”

 

Wapner received four Daytime Emmy nominations for his work on the People’s Court and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

 

Judge Wapner was a graduate of the University of Southern California in 1941 and its law school in 1948 after serving in World War II. Wapner was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star while serving in the South Pacific as a United State Army Officer.

 

He survived by Mickey Wapner, his wife of 70 years, as well as other family members and friends.
