Quincy Hancock Street Misalignment project goes bump in the night.

Just when one might think that traveling in and around Quincy Center might finally becoming less of a construction site ordeal given the recent completion of repaving a stretch of Burgin Parkway and the final top-coating of asphalt on the realigned Hancock Street in Quincy Center, traffic was – of course – yet again slowed to crawl.

First to slow up things was the first so-called “Speed Table” crosswalk crossing of Hancock Street near Craig’s Cafe.

Speed tables are supposed to both calm as well as slow traffic and which – for the most part – they do do.

Calming irate drivers, however, not so much.

On a positive note, at least the road closing necessary to build the first ever “Speed Hump” in Quincy was completed during the first weekend of November and so wreaking but (relatively, ed.) modest havoc on trafficking in Quincy Center.

Construction of the second Speed Table in front of the Presidents Place Building, however, commenced on a Monday and so both reduced traffic to one lane in each direction as well as forced drivers to travel within confusing corridors of orange traffic cones and concrete Jersey barriers.

Particular ugly was during the evening commute as no police detail was in place to direct both vehicular and pedestrians traffic as the construction time police detail called it a day when construction work ceased for the day.

As the regular crosswalk was taken out of service and a clear temporary substitute crosswalk was clearly not obvious to either pedestrians or especially drivers at what is already a confusing pedestrian crossing, it was arguably a holiday season miracle that no pedestrians have been reported as strike by passing vehicles.

At least not yet anyway.

Further problematic, given today’s inclement weather, construction workers were not working on this project today and this has so added at least another day of traffic pain before this particular Hancock Street Misalignment Project sub-project might be actually completed.

Regardless, expect Quincy Quarry to continue to cover this long running as well as running a year late road construction project.
