Quincy rated at the bottom of the list of the worst Boston suburbs.

In a piece of arguably old news as far as honest locals are concerned, a survey ranked Quincy at number nine on a list of the ten worst Boston suburbs.

The total number of communities reviewed in this survey was thirty-four and where those within the Route 128/93 beltway.

While admittedly, any set of ranking of criteria are open to criticism – for example, most any of those those promulgated by Quincy’s City Hall – this survey’s selection criteria were adequately sound as well as then determined per government census data, Bureau of Labor Statistics data and Sperling’s Best Places.

The criteria:
  • Spending per student in local public schools
  • Employment rates
  • Median income
  • Population density (the assumption: things available to do)
  • Home prices

Again, the criteria used are all perfectly reasonable ones to use.

While it not a surprise that Revere came in as the worst Boston suburb, it was a bit of a surprise in the Quincy Quarry newsroom that Stoneham came in second.

Similarly a bit of surprise was that Chelsea came in tied at only the sixth worst Boston suburb.

The biggest surprise of all, however, was that tenth worst ranked Saugus came in less bad than ninth worst-ranked Quincy.

Really, Saugus ranked less bad than Quincy?

Ouch.

Key to the Q ending up ranked worse than Saugus was Quincy’s higher local unemployment rate.

Also note that Quincy was the only south of Boston suburban community to rank among the ten worst.

Again, read it here and weep.
