Wings of freedom | quincy newsThis past weekend, the Collings Foundation presented its annual “Wings of Freedom” tour.
Based in Stow, Mass., the Collings Foundation is a non-profit educational foundation dedicated to preserving historical artifacts.
The Foundation’s “Wings of Freedom” tour is an aviation showcase that offers people the opportunity to experience World War II aircrafts first-hand. Those who attend the showcase are given the opportunity to tour the inside of the planes.
In addition, the Foundation also opens these planes up to the public for flight experiences.
On display were three bombers, the B-17 Flying Fortress, B-25 Mitchell and B-24 Liberator, as well as the P-51C Mustang dual control fighter plane. The bombers were open to the public and all three aircrafts were open for flight experiences.

Hundreds of people turned out for the weekend including many veterans – some of whom had battled in World War II themselves. One man said he had flown in the B-17 during the war, and had returned to take to the skies again.

Another World War II veteran, this one a pilot, was given the opportunity to step back into a P-51C Mustang. Both men were happily reminiscing with the general public and sharing stories of their lives.
The Collings foundation also offered merchandise for sale including t-shirts, hats, pins, and posters. At the conclusion of the tours, at 5 p.m., those still in attendance got the chance to see the B-25 take off.
The “Wings of Freedom” tour is currently in Nashua, NH. and will be visiting Maine after, but will return this weekend and land in Worcester, Mass. Tickets for entry need not be purchased in advanced, and cost $12 per person.
Tours take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday Sept. 25, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Flight demonstrations take place immediately prior to opening and after closing.
