Quincy straw poll bodes ill for duly embattled incumbent Mayor Thomas P. Koch.
In a sign of perhaps a pending tectonic shift within City Hall, last week the City of Quincy City Clerk pulled out by lot the lineup for the ballot for the various local races for which a primary election is to be held on September 24.
Specifically, for the mayoral heavyweight preliminary bout.
While well known to be adept at handling a deck of cards at the high stakes table notwithstanding, the City Clerk was not able to do any favors for the incumbent in a city wherein election outcomes have long been held suspect by many.
Then again, perhaps he knows which way the wind blows.
Regardless, the by lot drawing for ballot position placement played out as follows.

The current line-up in ballot order as well as someone so coming up short yet again

At the top of the ballot will be former mayor and yet again challenger Bill Phelan.
Batting second will be longtime City Councillor Doug Gutro.
In the third slot will be School Committee and repeat challenger Anne Mahoney.
Finally, at the bottom of the list, is the duly embattled incumbent Mayor Thomas P. Koch and so coming up short yet again.
For Inside Election wonks, top of the ballot name placement has long been viewed as a huge advantage come election day.
At least it is given no creative ballot counting shenanigans.
Speaking of shenanigans, the federal court arraignment of Daniel J. Flynn III, a since childhood friend of the embattled incumbent Mayor Thomas P. Koch, is set for right around– if not slightly before – the September’s primary election in the Q.
Expect Quincy Quarry to continue its unique no holds barred and hard-hitting election coverage as well as its coverage of the likely metastasizing carbuncle on the mayoralty that is FlynnFlamGate.
