Billerica Selectman following Quincy’s number one ward heeler’s lead and so opting to take trafficking into his own hands?
Billerica Selectman George Simolaris was recently as well as widely reported as taking the paint into his own hands to paint green some Town of Billerica crosswalks.
Editor’s note: Simolaris’ day job is working as a painting contractor.
Initial reports on Simolaris’ action showed him adamant, if not arguably self-righteously defiant, that his actions were entirely justified given his claims that public safety was in peril as the sidewalks’ paint markings were worn as well as otherwise impaired given ongoing roadwork.
Quickly following, however, other media opined that perhaps Simolaris had perhaps crossed the line.
Subsequent reporting by the Boston broadsheet and other media, further paint a different picture of a man who was finally beginning to realize that his actions were, in fact, problematic, if not only crossing the line.
For example, given that he was facing criminal charges of defacing public property as well as looking at having to reimburse the Town of Billerica thousands of dollars to pay for removing his unauthorized paint job.
As such, the to be expected walk back public relations apologies by Simolaris via the media commenced.
Small PR problem, however: while many Town of Billerica residents were not surprised when they found out that Mr. Simolaris was the sidewalk painting perp, most also expressed that that there is a right way to do things and a wrong way – and that this was the wrong way.
Quincy Quarry concurs: rules exist for reasons – and sometimes perhaps even arguably sound reasons. As such, when public officials opt to flaunt them, they should be made public examples over their improper actions.
Similarly, claims of public safety – especially after the fact of wholly disregarding the rule of law by an elected public official – are, well, suspect as well as especially when undertaking the usual standard procedures and then allowing for some patience would appear to have not been duly undertaken before Simolaris took a paint brush into his own hands.
In the meanwhile, whether – or not – Quincy’s number one ward heeler eventually comes to realize the error of her own prior ways and but self-serving precedent when it comes to illegal trafficking with local traffic remains to be seen.
That and owning up to her arguably improperly voting in the past to approve annual city budget appropriations to be paid out to the Chamber of Commerce and where she is employed as its head of tourism.
