Quincy residents spike plans for Olympic Beach Volleyball in Quincy.
In one of the most lopsided denouements of one of the many – if not all but innumerable – dumb ideas at least enabled by the Koch Maladministration, the overwhelming number of people who stepped up to the mike at a recent neighborhood meeting to comment mostly spoke negatively on the proposed plans to bring Olympic Beach Volleyball to Quincy in 2024.

At the same time, embattled incumbent Mayor Thomas P. Koch apparently expected as much.
During his opening comments at the beginning of this community meeting ostensibly hosted by the Boston 2024 Committee, the embattled incumbent stated that he hoped for local support as such would things easier as opposed to more difficult.

In short, local public opinion apparently be damned.
The duly embattled Koch also announced that he would be leaving the meeting early – and then soon did so.
After Koch spoke, representatives from Boston 2024 then presented the to be expected audio/visual presentation of their still in the works and arguably but a cocktail napkin of a plan before much more briefly touching upon the even more recently patched together and laughable proposal to substantially site Olympic beach volleyball in Squantum Point State Park and finally opening the floor to comment by those attending the meeting.
Amazingly, of all of the many questions then broached by attendees, no one asked when did beach volleyball become an Olympic event.

Then again, neither did any of the Boston 2024 representatives actually answer any of the questions asked of them.
In other words, your basic PR dog and pony show.
At the same time, as well as to at least affect balanced and fair coverage, Quincy Quarry must only properly note that a modest number of the public commenters at this meeting did, in fact, speak favorably of the Olympics – at least generally.
Even so, essentially no one spoke favorably of siting beach volleyball in Marina Bay in the wake of Beacon Hill and other Boston Common-adjacent residents as well as other stakeholders fatally spiked previous plans to site beach volleyball on the Boston Common.

Unfortunately, and however upscale Marina Bay is compared to most of the rest of Quincy, Marina Bay residents do not have anywhere the financial clout of the mostly well-beyond merely über upscale residents adjacent to the Boston Common.
Marina Bay property owners do, however, possess a trump card: as noted by one Marina Bay homeowner, the various Marina Bay property owners’ associations own – and thus would appear to have control over– the roads in Marina Bay.
Truly, at this point a dropped pin could have been heard if one had then been dropped.

After recovering from the pose-freezing headlights so focused upon them, Boston 2024 representatives looked about the room so that they might be perhaps be able to glare at Mayor Koch for his apparently not bringing this fundamental, if not also at least volleyball-busting, fact to their attention.
Unfortunately for them, however, and as noted previously, duly embattled incumbent Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch had already left the meeting and probably to attend yet another Koch campaign donation shakedown or perhaps go to yet another private meeting to offer waivers and/or favors to anyone willing to build anything in the sterile and banal urban strip mall that currently appears to be slated for Quincy Center.

As such, the Boston 2024 team was so left to try to fend off this”Kill” shot without the benefit of any viable means to do anything about it other than to but feebly deflect it into the audience as it also lost this arguable game set and match point.
All manner of environmental questions about the proposed plan’s infringing upon a designated wildlife habitat were similarly left little more than acknowledged by the Boston 2024 representatives’ claims to be planing on discussing such things with the various as well as all but intractable bureaucracies.

Also broached were concerns about Boston 2024’s transportation plan for transporting beach volleyball spectators.
For example, when it was reiterated that the transportation plan was to rely exclusively on the MBTA, meeting attendees burst into laughing out loud, with some also rolling on the floor.
Most importantly, it was clear that those attending knew a “Big Dig” when they saw one and thus Boston 2024 was unable to dig any shots, much less any of the “Kill” spikes spiked its way.
