Quincy Korean War remembrance kerfuffle much spin about nothing?
In recent days, the South Shore broadsheet ran a story about complaints by some that the ongoing labor unions protesting alleged broken promises of assuring jobs for local construction workers allegedly disrupted a Korean War veterans remembrance of the Quincy natives who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of freedom.

Given the considerable veterans connections among the Quincy Quarry team, this coverage piqued the Quarry’s attention.
Upon further review, however, questions about the allegations quickly became apparent.
For starters, most of the reader comments posted to the article were responsibly defended the union protesters long history of supporting veterans whereas those few protesting the union protest were otherwise.

Further, the picture featured in the South Shore broadsheet prominently featured a Mayor Koch loyalist at this remembrance event on city property and thus at least ostensibly co-hosted by the mayor.
Additionally, it would appear that one of the mayor’s brothers-in-law was caught in the photograph speaking to the driver of the protest sign/mobile billboard truck.
Accordingly, Quincy Quarry followed up as best it could to endeavor balanced and fair coverage of events.
For example, while the Quarry did find some limited negativity, a fair portion of it would appear to be tied to those variously tied to City Hall as opposed to from Korean war veterans.

For example, the protest truck probably likely would passed all but unnoticed had the above mentioned mayor’s brother-in-law – who is also a local state senator as well as whom Quincy Quarry was unable to find any indication of military service by him – had not at an elevated speaking level told the driver duly stopped at a red traffic light that he had to move along.
This outburst, in turn, brought attention to the truck by those who had instead been focused on the memorial remembrance ceremony.
So what also, apparently, for the fact that the truck was just passing by on a public street, did not have any sort of sound system protesting anything nor in any other way disrupted the event.
Further, in a Quincy Quarry interview with the driver of the protest truck, he stated that he had no advance knowledge of the remembrance and was just driving the silent protest billboard truck around the Q.

Additionally, the driver said that he was a Vietnam era vet and was wearing his VFW post baseball cap during his interview by this Quincy Quarry reporter and the Quarry would be among the last to question a soft-spoken claim of combat experience.
Given his word and appearance, Quincy Quarry has no reason to believe anything other than that he was just truckin‘ around the Q while exercising his Constitutional right to picket the government.

Additionally, the South Shore broadsheet apparently failed to happen upon comments from at least some as regards the mobile protest billboard.
The timbre of the comments provided to Quincy Quarry ranged from “Only 185 pounds – ya, right . . . ” to “Hey, he’s (Koch, ed.) not a vet! ” to “No way he (Koch, ed.) is 5′ 8″.”
In short, it would appear that more of the veterans in attendance were at least more amused with the non-vet ostensibly hosting the event than having any problems with an apparently innocent as well as but coincidentally passing by silent protest against that non-vet.

After all, they, their fallen comrades in arms as well as many other generations who have serviced have long as well as tragically all too often had to fight to protect this and the other rights which have the United States of America the beacon of freedom that it has been since its very inception.
