Chicago former public schools chief executive officer expected to plead guilty.
In a refreshing change – or perhaps given an extremely solid case by the prosecution, former Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett is apparently about to plead guilty to charges she facilitated no-bid contracts worth over $23 million to an educational consulting firm in return for hundreds of thousands of dollars in kickbacks and other various other benefits for her and family members.
The federal indictment of Byrd-Bennett notes twenty two counts.
While such considerable corruption by a high ranking government official is no surprise to anyone familiar with how things tend to work in Chicago and Massachusetts, such a quick pleading without a trial was all but unprecedented.
After all, former Illinois Governor and now convicted felon Rod Blagojevich is still continuing to file so far mostly unsuccessful appeals to date overturn his brazen plans to sell a US Senate seat to the highest bidder.
